Laying up a Car
The most important thing is:
Disconnect the battery. (A dashboard clock will, in time, run a battery completely flat.)
If the lay-up is for a short period, say three of four months; no draining of water is necessary. But care must be taken to keep any damp at bay.
A sophisticated precaution is to remove the plugs from the engine and block the apertures with an oily wad. Routine inspection should ensure that the rest of the engine and tarnish able parts are wiped over to remove condensation moisture.
If a prolonged layup is planned, the tyres need attention: it is bad for the rubber to have a sustained weight for months on end. Either:
Remove the wheels and lay them out flat on their sides, or
Arrange to have the car shunted in and out of the garage by hand if necessary, to revive the elasticity of the tyres.
If only to keep off dust spoliation from the inside upholstery, cover the whole car with a sheet or aluminum cloth spread.
Warning: Never run the engine in the garage with the garage door shut. Exhaust fumes are insidious, and quickly fetal.
